Factors Influencing Widowed Elders¡¯ Depression Symptoms

Abstract
Objectives: This study¡¯saim was to examine the factors influencing depression symptoms among widowed elders, for which. it use the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA 7th) dataset. The participants were 1,299 widowed elders aged 65 years and over.

Methods: A multiple regression model was used to study the factors influencing depression symptoms among widowed elders.

Results: The results showed significant depression in widowed elders; relationships with: children satisfaction(B=-0.045, p<0.001), frequency of meetings with friends(B=-0.105, p<0.001), health status satisfaction(B=-0.205, p<0.001), and economic activity status(B=-0.061, p=0.021). In addition, the male and female groups showed significant relationships between depression symptoms and children satisfaction(B=-0.060, p<0.001; B=-0.043, p<0.001), as well as health status satisfaction(B=-0.046, p=0.002; B=-0.029, p<0.001).

Conclusions: This study suggests that social support and economic poverty are important protective factors against depression in widowed elders.
